Símbolo extremamente antigo e de caráter universal, apresenta número imenso de variações e assume sentido religioso e esotérico para diversos povos. Em todas as culturas, seu significado arquetípico é o da união dos opostos: o eixo vertical (masculino) e o eixo horizontal (feminino). No cristianismo, é o emblema máximo. Para a teosofia, traz a idéia do homem regenerado, aquele que conseguiu integrar harmoniosamente suas duas partes e que, “crucificado” como mortal, renasce como imortal. Na simbologia rosa-cruz, evoca os quatro reinos da natureza. Como símbolo da “Árvore da Vida”, representa o “eixo do mundo”: a ponte ou escada através da qual a alma pode chegar a Deus.

The cross is often recognized as the uniting of opposites. The vertical and the horizontal bars are joined together to form the sacred shape. This may symbolize the uniting of man with the Divine, the man with the woman, or the microcosm with the macrocosm. Like the image shows, two opposites brought together can produce fire. And ultimately, life.

The Rosicrucian Order uses the symbol of a cross with a white rose placed at the intersection. According to some the cross represents man (united with God?), and the rose as the unfolding consciousness.

CIRCLE (quartered): The sacred circle filled with a cross, four equal lines pointing from the center to the spirits of the north, east, south, and west -- or to the basic element: earth, water, air (or wind), and fire. In Native American traditions, it forms the basic pattern of the MEDICINE WHEEL and plays a vital part in major spiritual rituals. Many contemporary pagans consider it their main symbol for transmitting the energy of the goddess.
